This document explains what Football Signals represent within the Goalroll methodology and why they identify situations worthy of investigation rather than predictions or recommendations.
Every methodology requires a starting point. Before an organisation can investigate, interpret or make a decision, it must first determine which situations deserve its attention. Without a structured way of identifying meaningful situations, investigation quickly becomes reactive, inconsistent and heavily influenced by intuition. Valuable opportunities remain unnoticed while insignificant events consume time and resources.
Goalroll addresses this challenge through the concept of Signals. A Signal is not a conclusion, a recommendation or a prediction. It is the result of a structured observation process that identifies situations whose behavioural characteristics justify further investigation. Its purpose is remarkably simple: to answer the question, “What deserves my attention?” Everything that follows belongs to the investigation itself.
This distinction is essential because Goalroll never confuses detection with decision-making. A Signal marks the beginning of the process, not its conclusion.
A Signal Is An Invitation To Investigate
The word “signal” often implies certainty. In many contexts, receiving a signal suggests that action should immediately follow. Goalroll deliberately rejects this interpretation. Within the Goalroll methodology, a Signal never instructs the user to act. It simply indicates that observable conditions have reached a point where further investigation becomes worthwhile.
This approach protects the decision-making process from one of its most common weaknesses: confusing visibility with certainty. A situation may deserve attention without necessarily justifying execution. Observation can reveal interesting behaviour while investigation ultimately concludes that no decision should be made. Both outcomes remain valuable because the objective is understanding rather than activity.
A Signal therefore reduces discovery time. It does not reduce the responsibility to think.
Signals Are Built From Behaviour, Not Expectations
Every Signal originates from observable behaviour. It is generated because predefined behavioural conditions have been identified through a consistent methodology rather than because an outcome is expected to occur. This distinction separates Goalroll from approaches that begin with prediction and then search for supporting evidence.
Behaviour provides a more stable foundation because it can be observed objectively. Patterns emerge through recurrence, context and consistency rather than personal belief. Signals therefore reflect what has been observed, not what someone hopes will happen next.
This discipline allows Goalroll to remain faithful to one of its fundamental principles: observation always precedes interpretation. A Signal exists because behaviour has been identified, not because a conclusion has already been reached.
Strong Signals Lead To Better Investigations
Not every observation deserves the same level of attention. One of the primary responsibilities of a methodology is distinguishing meaningful situations from ordinary background activity. Signals perform this filtering role by directing attention toward situations where investigation has the greatest potential to improve understanding.
This filtering process does not guarantee that every investigation will produce valuable conclusions. Some Signals will ultimately reveal insufficient evidence. Others may demonstrate that initial observations were incomplete or misleading. These outcomes should not be viewed as failures. They represent the normal functioning of an investigative methodology that values evidence above expectation.
The quality of a Signal is therefore measured by its ability to initiate worthwhile investigation rather than by the outcome of any individual event.
Decision-Making Always Belongs To The User
Perhaps the most important characteristic of a Goalroll Signal is what it does not do. It does not replace judgement. It does not recommend execution. It does not guarantee success. Every Signal exists within a methodology designed to improve understanding while preserving human responsibility at every stage of the decision process.
Once a Signal has been identified, investigation begins. Context is examined, evidence is evaluated and competing explanations are considered. Only after this process has taken place can the user independently determine whether a decision is appropriate. The Signal has already fulfilled its responsibility by ensuring that the situation was not overlooked.
This separation between identification and decision is one of the defining characteristics of the Goalroll methodology. Signals identify. Investigation explains. Documentation preserves. Human judgement decides.
By preserving these distinct responsibilities, Goalroll transforms Signals into something more valuable than alerts or recommendations.
